Our Story
South Central Colfax County Special Hospital District (SCCCSHD) was established in 1986 to bring health care providers and services to rural communities of Colfax County. At that time, there was only a small general hospital in Springer and no medical providers in Cimarron or Angel Fire.
Over the years, we’ve converted the hospital to a nursing facility with 33 beds, opened the Cimarron Healthcare Clinic and opened the Moreno Valley Healthcare Clinic. Cimarron staffs two Nurse Practitioner and one physician assistant, and Moreno Valley has one family nurse practitioner. We also operate a full-service laboratory that covers the entire county.
The hospital district area of operations is based upon the school district boundaries for Maxwell, Springer and Cimarron School Districts. With a service population of 6,000, we cover almost 3,100 square miles. If you look at the national basis, we’re operating under Frontier Medicine, since we’re so rural.
The closest acute general hospital is 35 miles from Springer, and 60 miles from Cimarron. It is in Raton, Miner’s Colfax Medical Center. The closest hospital for Moreno Valley is in Taos, Holy Cross Hospital. It’s 30 miles away, through mountain canyons.
A 5 member board governs SCCCSHD, and they’re elected by popular vote to represent each of the school districts. They are not only elected, but they must also be consumers of the hospital district’s services. They have 5 year terms, and they oversee all aspects of the hospital district.
The district’s funding comes from a 4.25 million dollar tax levy on properties within the district’s boundaries. We’re a medically unserved area, so the funding is necessary for the day-to-day functioning. The Mil Levy is on the ballad every 4 years.
Our Board
The SCCCSHD Board has 5 members, each elected by the section of the hospital district boundaries in which they live. Each member must also be a consumer of the services offered by the hospital district. They serve for 5 years, then must run for an additional term.
